Jesus didn't purify the disciples through harsh, painful experiences but rather He said in John 15:3, you're clean through the words I have spoken unto you.

Jesus also said in Mark 4 that affliction comes to steal the Word from our hearts not to purify us and make us better.

Don't think for a moment that the stuff you're going through was orchestrated by God, but rather trust Him to bring you out of it.
